What Kind of Damage Can Be Repaired in Windshields?

Not all windshield damage means you need a full replacement. In many cases, a quick, professional repair is all it takes to restore the glass and prevent further problems. But how do you know which types of damage are fixable—and which require a new windshield?

At RAM Auto Glass, we specialize in both windshield repairs and replacements across Vaughan, Mississauga, and Markham. Here’s how to tell the difference and make the right call before a small chip becomes a costly crack.

✅ Damage That Can Typically Be Repaired

1. Stone Chips (Bullseyes)

These are small, circular spots caused by a direct impact—like a rock bouncing up from the road. If the bullseye is smaller than a loonie (1 inch in diameter) and not near the edge, it’s usually repairable.

2. Star Breaks

A star break looks like a small central impact with thin cracks radiating outward. If the legs of the star don’t exceed a few inches and haven’t spread, a technician can seal it with resin and prevent it from growing.

3. Combination Cracks

When a bullseye and star break occur together, it’s called a combination crack. As long as it’s under 3 inches and away from the edge or driver’s line of sight, repair is still possible.

4. Short Cracks (Under 6 Inches)

Hairline cracks under 6 inches are often repairable. Left untreated, though, they can spread quickly—especially during Ontario’s fluctuating weather. That’s why fast response is key.

❌ Damage That Usually Requires Windshield Replacement

1. Edge Cracks

Cracks that start within 2 inches of the edge of the windshield weaken the structural integrity. Because this area bears more stress, edge cracks almost always require replacement.

2. Long Cracks (Over 6 Inches)

These have usually begun to spread and compromise a large portion of the glass. No repair can safely stop their progression, so replacement is the only option.

3. Multiple Areas of Damage

Even if each chip is small, multiple impact points can make the glass too unstable to repair. A technician may recommend full replacement to restore full safety function.

4. Cracks in Driver’s Line of Sight

Even if technically repairable, damage that sits directly in the driver’s viewing area is best replaced. Resin repairs can leave minor distortion that may affect your visibility and focus.

According to NHTSA guidelines, visibility is a key safety concern when determining whether to repair or replace damaged auto glass.

Why Speed Matters

What starts as a small, repairable chip can easily turn into a replacement-level crack within days. Weather, road vibration, and temperature swings all contribute to rapid deterioration. That’s why it’s important to get chips repaired early—often for less than your insurance deductible.
