Getting your windshield or window glass replaced is a smart move for safety—but the job isn’t done when the technician leaves. What you do in the first 24–48 hours can make or break the integrity of the new glass. Unfortunately, many people unknowingly make mistakes that jeopardize the seal, cause leaks, or reduce visibility.
At RAM Auto Glass, we provide expert guidance before, during, and after every installation. Here are the most common post-replacement mistakes—and how to avoid them.
1. Driving Too Soon
After a windshield is replaced, the adhesive (usually polyurethane) needs time to cure and bond. Driving too early can shift the glass and break the seal.
We recommend waiting at least 60 minutes after installation before driving. Our technicians will always confirm your specific “safe drive-away time” depending on the product used and the temperature conditions.
2. Slamming the Doors
It might seem harmless, but closing your doors too forcefully can create pressure inside the cabin, pushing on the new glass from the inside. This can weaken the adhesive bond, especially during the first day.
Instead, close doors gently and keep at least one window slightly open for the first 24 hours to let air pressure equalize naturally.
3. Ignoring the Tape
If your technician applies blue or painter’s tape along the glass edges—don’t remove it too soon. This tape holds molding or trim in place while the adhesive cures and also prevents dust and debris from interfering with the seal.
We recommend leaving the tape on for at least 24 hours, unless told otherwise by your technician.
4. Using a Car Wash Right Away
High-pressure water jets and harsh detergents can interfere with fresh adhesive. Avoid commercial car washes for at least 48 hours after the replacement. Handwashing with minimal water pressure is fine after a full day has passed.
The NHTSA emphasizes proper sealing and moisture protection in the first hours after installation to ensure structural integrity and passenger safety.
5. Failing to Inspect the Work
Before driving off, take a moment to inspect the new glass. Look for:
- Visible gaps or uneven sealant
- Loose trim or moldings
- Air bubbles in the adhesive
- Dust or debris inside the cabin
RAM Auto Glass provides a detailed post-service checklist and backs every installation with a written warranty. If something doesn’t look or feel right, contact us immediately—we’ll make it right.
6. Not Scheduling ADAS Recalibration
Many newer vehicles have advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like lane-keeping or automatic braking, which rely on cameras mounted on the windshield. When the glass is replaced, these systems may require recalibration.
Skipping this step could impact the accuracy of safety features. According to I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair), recalibration is critical after any glass replacement that affects sensors or camera placement.
7. Letting Insurance Handle It All (Without Double-Checking)
Even if your insurance covers the replacement, don’t assume everything was installed to the highest standard. Always choose a trusted shop, ask for OEM or high-quality aftermarket glass, and make sure the technician is certified and insured.
