If your windshield has a chip or crack and it’s raining, you might be wondering—can it still be repaired? The short answer: not safely. Moisture interferes with resin bonding, which means repairs done in wet conditions are unlikely to last. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck.
At RAM Auto Glass, we offer mobile windshield repairs across Vaughan and the GTA—even on rainy days. Here’s how we handle wet-weather repairs properly and what you should know if you’re facing rain and a cracked windshield.
Why Rain Interferes With Repairs
Windshield chip repair involves injecting a liquid resin into the damaged area and curing it with UV light. For this to work effectively:
- The inside of the crack or chip must be completely dry
- The surface must be clean and free from moisture or debris
- The resin must bond directly to the glass—moisture acts as a barrier
If water is present inside the crack, it can dilute or block the resin. This leads to weak bonding, hazing, or failure of the repair entirely.
How We Handle Repairs in Rainy Conditions
Rain doesn’t automatically cancel a mobile repair. Our team carries protective canopy kits and vehicle covers to shield the windshield while we work. We also use safe drying tools to remove moisture from the damaged area before applying resin.
If the rain is too heavy or you’re parked in an exposed area, we may reschedule—or work with you to relocate to a nearby underground or covered location. Our FAQs explain our weather policy and rescheduling options.
What If Moisture Already Got Into the Crack?
If water has already entered the crack before the repair, the risk of failure increases. However, if it’s a minor chip and we can fully dry and evacuate the air pocket, the repair may still be successful.
In cases where moisture has caused the crack to grow or dirt to enter the chip, a full replacement may be safer. Our technician will evaluate it on-site and give you honest guidance.
Don’t Try to DIY in the Rain
Over-the-counter repair kits are never a good idea in wet conditions. They don’t have the vacuum capability to remove trapped water, and applying resin on wet glass can create bubbles or leave streaks that affect visibility.
In fact, I-CAR and NHTSA both caution against attempting auto glass repairs without proper environmental conditions and curing equipment.
Tips to Protect Your Windshield Until the Rain Stops
- Place clear tape over the chip (not duct tape) to reduce moisture intrusion
- Park under cover or in a garage if possible
- Avoid using defrosters or AC that could cause temperature stress
- Schedule your repair as soon as dry conditions return
Can You Replace Windshields in the Rain?
Yes—replacements are more forgiving than resin repairs because the entire pane is removed and resealed. As long as we can work in a sheltered area, we can safely replace the glass using waterproof adhesives and proper curing time.
