If your vehicle has modern safety features like lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, it likely uses an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). And many of these systems rely on a precisely installed windshield to function correctly.
So, what happens if you replace that windshield with an aftermarket one? Can it affect your ADAS performance? The short answer: yes, it can—but it depends on quality, installation, and recalibration.
At RAM Auto Glass, we install both OEM and certified aftermarket windshields across Vaughan and the GTA. Here’s what you need to know before making your decision.
How ADAS Systems Rely on Your Windshield
ADAS sensors and cameras are often mounted to the interior side of your windshield—usually behind the rearview mirror. These cameras monitor lane markings, traffic, and objects ahead. If the position of the windshield is off by even a few millimetres, it can throw off camera alignment.
According to NHTSA and I-CAR, proper ADAS function depends on:
- Correct windshield curvature and thickness
- Proper camera bracket mounting
- Accurate camera recalibration after installation
Are Aftermarket Windshields All Bad?
Not at all. Certified aftermarket windshields from reputable manufacturers are designed to match OEM specifications—including shape, tint, and mounting bracket placement. These are often perfectly suitable for ADAS-equipped vehicles, especially if installed by a certified technician and followed by proper recalibration.
However, low-cost or uncertified aftermarket windshields may have slight variations that interfere with sensor angles, distort the camera view, or even cause error codes.
When to Stick With OEM Glass
We typically recommend OEM replacement glass if:
- Your vehicle is less than 3 years old and still under full warranty
- Your automaker or insurer specifically requires OEM for ADAS
- Your ADAS camera has very tight calibration tolerances
Many insurers will cover OEM glass for newer or luxury vehicles. We can check your policy and help you decide.
Recalibration Is Non-Negotiable
No matter which glass you choose, recalibration is mandatory after replacing a windshield with ADAS. This process involves using manufacturer-specific tools to realign the camera and restore sensor accuracy.
Driving without recalibration may lead to:
- Delayed emergency braking response
- Faulty lane-keeping or cruise control
- Dashboard warning lights
At RAM Auto Glass, we inform every customer with an ADAS-equipped vehicle if recalibration is required and refer to trusted local partners to complete the process.
